Subject: [*] ABFfit4.9 Maximum Likelihood Profil Fitting
A.Filhol, Institut Laue Langevin, 156X, F-38042 Grenoble Cedex, France
Email: filhol@ill.fr
ABFfit, a program for interactive profile fitting on (e.g.) diffraction data.
- ABFfit is a tool for highly interactive processing of small to medium size
data sets. E.g. in the specific case of powder diffraction it is well suited
to preliminary data processing before a Rietveld fit can be started or to
difficult case requiring user interaction. It has been designed for research
and teaching.
- Uses an original maximum likelihood algorithm designed for Poisson
distributed data (counts).
- Handles polynomial background and various peak shapes either build-in
or provided as plug-ins CODE resources.
- Build-in peak shapes: Symmetrical (Gauss, Lorentz, Cauchy, Pseudo-Voigt)
and asymmetrical (Gumbel+, Gumbel-).
- Supports fit constraints on the parameters.
- Interactive graphical initialization of the fitting algorithm with the
possibility of saving the starting model for further processing of the data
in automatic mode (pseudo-batch).
- Provides extensive statistical summaries on the fit (Plots of normalized
residuals, joint confidence regions, diagnostic measures on influential
data points, etc..).
This demo version is fully functional except that numerical results are
neither
displayed nor printed. The full version is marketed by the University of
St Etienne (France).

Greetings!
This is a quicktime animation I ran up using Infini-D 2.0. It took me about
a day of playing to get used to the program, and an evening to plan and
execute this 10 second piece of animation, and a night for it to cook on a
Quadra 700.
It shows a die bouncing through the void, which then becomes the company
logo for a place my wife works at (I made it for her).
And it's a bit too large for my mailer, so it's coming to you in 3 pieces.
Thanks!

Subject: [*] Folder Icon Cleaner 1.0.2
Folder Icon Cleaner is a small utility that lets you get rid
correctly of those space and time wasting custom icons, sticked
right there on your folders.
The Finder keeps every folder icon in a separate hidden file.
The known versions of the Finder (7.0, 7.0.1, 7.1) do not
delete this file when removing a custom folder icon. They only
delete the icon resources from the file. Note that no other
information is kept into these Icon files. Folder Icon Cleaner
correctly removes the icon by deleting the file (and by updating
the Use custom icon attribute of the folder). No data is lost,
you only gain a little more free space on your disk.
Folder Icon Cleaner can only be used under System 7 or later;
however, it is rather useless on a System 6-or-older Macintosh.
Life is easier with a drag&drop interface.

Subject: [*] INFOMaker 2.62 file parsing utility
Every so often someone asks about text parsing software. The shareware
INFOMaker from Green Mountain Software is rarely mentioned, which is
surprising since it is a more powerful parser than any of the common
alternatives listed. Easy to use, too. The following is extracted from the
documentation file for version 2.62 of May 1992:
INFOMaker is an easy to use utility application which will format data to
be used in the Macintosh*. The data to be formatted can be from other
computer systems (PCs, mainframes, etc.) or from other Macintosh*
applications. The program has been used extensively to convert database
information from VAX, UNIVAC, IBM, and CRAY mainframe computers and a
multitude of different micro computers. The ability of INFOMaker to
handle a wide variety of input file formats including multi-line records
makes it a versatile tool to users who manage information on the
Macintosh*.
INFOMaker will place all fields of a record in order on one line,
separate them with tabs, strip control characters, strip leading and/or
trailing spaces, insert information for missing data, remove any unwanted
data, and set the file CREATOR so that the data can be loaded directly
into an application.
INFOMaker Also Includes Other Special Utilities:
- Splitting files by character count or on defined record boundaries.
- Combining files into one file by individual selection or by folder.
- An extensive utility for changing the TYPE and CREATOR bytes of files
either individually or by folder.
INFOMaker will run on all Macintosh computers with 512k memory or more.
Requires System software version 4.2 or greater.
INFOMaker is a shareware product...The program that you have is the whole
enchilada, not just a demo."

Subject: [*] PowerTemplate Revision (powertemplate.hqx in report or art
directory)
Fellow PowerBook Users,
This archive contains the SNOWBALL PowerTemplate which is designed to
provide Apple PowerBook users with some of the functionality of
keyboard templates and other paper-based job aids to support their
computing work. I find that I often use the margins of my PowerBook
145 screen as a posting place for those yellow sticky notes, so I have
decided to explore the possibilities of expanding on this idea.
The enclosed graphics files contain PowerTemplates that you can modify
and print. I have included several formats of graphics files to
facilitate printing. Each of these files contains exactly the same
Generic PowerTemplate.
The Canvas format can be printed (just barely!) on ordinary
letter-sized paper by using the Canvas Print Selection feature. The
Scrapbook file is included to allow you to paste the PowerTemplate
into other tools to which I do not have access. The HyperCard stack
has the PowerTemplate in the background. This stack can be used to
design different PowerTemplates by creating a new card for each
working idea. Printing of HyperCard format has also not been tested.
(Using Canvas Layers is a much better way to do this, but I wanted to
try out a template in HyperCard.) The PICT and PICT1 formats have
also not been tested.
You may want to use legal sized paper in order to print a full
template. I have successfully printed the PowerTemplate on an Apple
ImageWriter I. Beware of automatic scaling by LaserWriters of various
types! I have not yet been able to produce an appropriately scaled
PowerTemplate on a LaserWriter. I need to work on this a little more
to figure out what is going wrong.
I have decided to ask the PowerBook community to help determine how to
best use this kind of job aid. You can help by putting a blank
PowerTemplate on your screen for a while and seeing what you find
useful to record there. Please drop me a line and let me know what
kinds of things for which the PowerTemplate is (and is not) useful.
Now some necessary legalese. Ahem. The PowerTemplate and the
SNOWBALL logo are copyrighted by John M. Ford, 1992, 1993. All rights
reserved. Nuff said. The PowerTemplate is free for all use that is
individual or non-commercial. If you do come up with a commercial use
that will make you a big pile of money, please talk to me about
passing along a little pile of that money. Enjoy!

Subject: A simple question about UNIX to Mac text
Hello there folks. I'm wondering if there is a drag-and-drop utility that can
process large numbers of text files to convert them from Unix formatting to

want converted, and type in a new file name, and all. I want it to do all that

Failing some utility on the Mac, is there a way to convert on Unix before I

Anyone have any info on when the Chinese Worldscript extensions
for 7.1 will be available? That was pretty much the only reason
why I layed out $50 for the software! Thanks!
When I was trying to find out about Japanese back in October, the
story was "Japanese in mid January, the other east asian systems
a couple months after that." This was one story among many, with
confusion rampant on a background of erroneous press releases,
so actual mileage may vary.
On the other hand, they're on a couple of the Developer CD-ROM's,
if you're lucky. I say "if you're lucky", because it appears
that only *some* October and Nov/Dec Developer's CD-ROM's have
them.
It sure doesn't seem like Apple wants people to write software
for the Asian market. Or maybe they'r of two minds...
Good luck.

Ah, there is your first misconception about Expander. Unlike Downline
which was written SPECIFICALLY to deal with .hqx files, Expander is designed
to handle ALL of the formats equally. It does not treat any of the formats
(.sit/.cpt/.pkg/.hqx) differently (except secondary scanning on .hqx files ;)
and therefore is usable by people on services other than the Internet who
never
have to deal with .hqx files.
If you put a file that Expander knows how to expand into your
Watch Folder, then Expander is going to expand it - that's it job! If you
don't
want the file expanded, then don't put it there :).

Understood. This is something that I hope to clear up in future
versions of Expander. What is there now is indeed confusing to many and doesn
not offer the full flexibility that many have requested. I am investigating
how to offer those features without bloating the product (our original goal
for 1.0 was a 50-60K product which handled all the standard online formats -
we made that goal, and with 3.0 we were able to add a LOT of nice new
funcationality in only a 15K increase in size (a bit large, but we also
added the new about pict which increase it ;)).

Subject: Hispanic lists
On Saturday, Jan 16, an editorial appeared in the Philadelphia
Inquirer titled "Computer bulletin boards should speak Spanish
too". It was primarily a complaint about Prodigy only permitting
messages in English, but also mentioned that CompuServe has
no Spanish language forums nor any forums focusing on concerns
specific to the Hispanic community. I am aware that there are at
least two lists on the Internet concerning Hungarian-related
issues and one of them is in Hungarian only. I am also aware
that Poland-L often has messages in Polish with a short summary
in English. Perhaps there are some Spanish language lists and/or
one focusing on the needs of the Hispanic community.
I will write a letter to the editor in which I will probably mention
that this is not necessarily an example of anti-Hispanic prejudice
but yet another reason not to use Prodigy. I also wish to mention
that one can get access to the Internet and perhaps a non-profit
could be organized giving members of this community access to
the Internet. How difficult would it be for a non-profit with funds
to set up a list. Alternatively, there probably are not too many
barriers to set up a Hispanic forum on CompuServe, are there?
Could some of you comment before I accidentally make a donkey
out of myself? Thanks, Pete Tamas.

Once again, our Authorized Apple Dealer's campus rep has proved to be a
moron.
I asked for the IIvx brochure. I got a photocopy of the front of the
brochure.
So could someone please tell me the "Ordering Information" (found on the back
of the brochure)?
I just want to know what different packages Apple sells - like, 4/80,
4/230...
what I'm hoping is that we can order a IIvx 8/80.
What if the back of the brochure doesn't offer an 8/80 package? Could I,
maybe, order one anyway, rather than having to order a 4/80 and then install
more RAM as soon as I get it?
Thanks in advance,
Dave <ssa92faj12@ecn.mass.edu>
P.S. Can anyone recommend a competent Authorized Apple Dealer in the
Boston/North Shore area? Somewhere I could go, with a box of blank disks, and
copy the 6.0.8 system disks, for instance? (Is that still an acceptable thing
to do? It's still on ftp.apple.com...)

I use a niftly little screensaver called AutoIdle at home. Nothing fancy,
nothing expensive (it's freeware), takes up almost no space and does the
job. This is on a Plus, system 6.0.8.
I also just recently downloaded an item called Tiny Saver and took it

this one was shareware, but I'm not entirely certain since I trashed it.

Last week I reported a problem with my new LogiCache accelerator:
>The problem is that if I try to use my MacRecorder sound digitizer through

>enabled, my machine slows to a crawl.
Actually, the main problem was that, even when I was able to digitize sound
under these conditions, the sound recorded with a weird flange sort of
effect.
I finally verified with Logica that they do have an incompatibility. They
believe that both a hardware and software change may be required, but don't
know when this will happen. They gave me the choice of returning the device
for
a full refund, or holding off in the hope that a fix will be available soon.
They also plan to do additional, broader compatibility testing on the
product.
I contacted DayStar as well and got an answer about their PowerCache within
about an hour. They had an incompatibility which has been corrected. I have
not
been able to validate this information.
I also contacted MacroMedia to see if the problem is being addressed in the
MacRecorder Driver (at version 1.02 for quite a while now). They acknowledged
the problem and indicated it happens in a Quadra with the cache on as well. As
a matter of company policy, they absolutely refused to say when a fix might be
available or even if they are working on it. It's unclear if they intend to
support the MacRecorder (after acquiring it from Farallon) since they are
being
so closed-mouthed.
Thanks to those who responded with helpful information. I'll probably hold off
returning the LogiCache for a little while. I like the idea that it has better
performance than the Daystar (zero wait state memory and twice the cache
size),
and is also cheaper. Hopefully they will get it fixed soon; the product has
been performing well otherwise. If anyone gets more information on this
problem, please post it or send me an E-Mail message.

Synergy Software provides a TimeServer Tool as part of their excellent
VersaTerm/VersaTerm Pro packages. I believe it is also part of their separate
network tools package (includes SLIP, FTP, Telnet, etc. tools). If you do not
need a whole terminal emulator package, then the separate tools package is the
way to go. It is cheaper & works with the Comm Toolbox & MacTCP & all

Mice receive their serial numbers at birth as a result of genetic
manipulation,
therefore the serialization is painless and definitely not cruel, and does
not
affect their ability to reproduce. Did you notice that only male mice are
available for the Macs ? The females are kept in the factory to produce more
mice, the males are sold.
Now you all know how the mice are serialized, we can stop this silly
discussion.
There are much more important issues to worry about. For instance,
how are mice de-serialized ? I have read that unauthorized
Apple dealers remove serial numbers ! How is this done ? This maybe a really
cruel treatment to mice we may have to worry about !

Subject: Printing a (currently) Postscript logo on a fax modem
Someone had asked how to put a bitmapped image of Postscript
code into word for printing via a fax modem. I replied, to which
he replied that I misunderstood his question. I promptly made a
mental note to further clarify and then accidentally deleted his
(or her) message (Doh!).
I am certainly capable of misunderstanding anything. However, I
think I do have a grasp of this one (but I could be wrong).
The problem is that the Postscript code must be rasterized
(made into a bitmap). This is currently done when the code
is downloaded to the Postscript printer. (In case you were
wondering what a RIP, AKA Raster Image Processor does, it
converts postscript code into the dots put on the page or film.
In other words, Postscript printers include a RIP as part of the
printer. A RIP is often a separate component with some high-
quality printers. If a service bureau has an old imagesetter, they
may extend the life of that imagesetter by just buying a RIP, which
converts the PostScript code to the image setter's code.
Our hero must now convert (rasterize) the Postscript code
him/herself because the fax modem is unable to do so. I
suggested that he/she take the PICT resource in the EPS
file and copy/paste it into the scrapbook. From the reply
I got, I surmise that the EPS file no longer exists or perhaps
never existed. What must be done is open the postscript code
in an application than can rasterize it. The probable suspects
are Illustrator and Freehand. This would involve saving the
Postscript code as text only and opening it in Illustrator or
FreeHand. However, its probably not that simple. There is
probably some other Postscript code required to for Illustrator
or FreeHand to open this file. If I wanted to solve this problem
AND learn about Postscript, I would look in one of the Postscript
books (Peachpit Press usually has good books and has one called
Postscript: A Visual Approach) for how an EPS file is defined. Or,
I would create a file in Illustrator or Freehand and save it as an
EPS file and poke around in that with Word.
Or perhaps someone who knows how to do this will fill in where
my knowledge leaves off.
If you don't care to experiment, print the file and scan it. I can't
think of another way to do it. Good luck!-Pete Tamas

few important details. Sorry about that!
We have a Sun LaserWriter, which is in fact an Apple LaserWriter II NT,

NFS/Share software and MacTCP.
We would like to be able to print from both Macs to the SUN printer

printer from a serial device attached to a single workstation into a
